XML Plug-ins Distinguish Commission River

Most of us who work creatively online are affiliated with one or more programs that help to "monetize" our content, either as an income producing sideline or to put bread on the table. You're no doubt familiar with Google, Amazon, and Commission Junction. But an upstart known as Commission River may be a generation ahead of all of them when it comes to in-situ marketing.

Owl Cell Phone Cellular Phone Finder ScreenshotWhat distinguishes Commission River is set of XML plug-ins that put the comparison shopping experience right on your website. To give you a better feel for what I mean, have a look at the Cellular Phone Finder I've installed on Owl Cell Phone.

Notice that the finder appears to be a fairly standard promotion page for selected cell phones. Actually, the content is dynamic and represents the most popular phones at a given time. Everything between the purple bar at the top of the page and the "wise tip" near the bottom is being pulled from Commission River using the plug-in code. What you don't see is a few lines of PHP code on this page and a number of files stored on my server. Those files have active code and a customizable style sheet.

Now, lets see what this plug-in technology can really do. Click on "view features" under any phone. Notice that a complete feature list pulls down. Click again, it rolls up. On the gray Cellular Phone Finder bar, you can select a particular carrier, manufacturer, price range, and type of phone. Or set them all. Let's try AT&T BlackBerry models that are free after rebate. The display now shows 3 models that meet that criteria. Click the check box next to two or all three and click on the "compare" button. You get a beautiful table with a column for each phone selected and a comparison of features, line by line. How would you like to try programming that yourself and keeping it up to date?

Of course, when a customer has decided on a model phone they'd like to buy, they can select that phone and be taken to a page where they can now select a compatible wireless plan and then be taken to an order entry page. Ultimately, they'll wind up at the WireFly site for fulfillment. Sure, you could use a standard banner or text link to take them to the same place. But look how much more value has been added by letting the customer interact with a comparison shopping tool right on your own site.

Commission River has just launched seven of these plug-ins, mostly related to communications technology services. They call them "best rate calculators." There are calculators for domestic long distance service, international long distance, T1 dedicated line services, DSL and Cable Internet, VoIP, Credit Cards, and the Cellular and Wireless calculator. In addition to the cellular phone finder, I've implemented the domestic long distance rate finder and VoIP Comparison Shopping, and soon expect to be fielding the whole suite.

If you also happen to write a blog or publish a website that appeals to visitors interested in residential and/or business technology services and have been wishing you had more interactive marketing content to offer, you should give the Commission River affiliate program a look. There's no cost to join or maintain a membership. Compensation is by generous sales commissions on the services your visitors order through your site. Many commissions are residual in nature, so that you can build up a steady income over time.
