How You Can Benefit From Wavelength Services

What do you do when you have a need for high bandwidth, security and flexibility in your WAN connections? This may be the time to take a closer look at wavelength services.


What tradeoffs should you do to ensure that you’re getting the right bandwidth for your operation? Certainly, there is the protocol competition between the dedicated point to point line services provided by SONET/SDH and Ethernet over Fiber. One important consideration is the protocol that you wish to transport. Ethernet is easiest to connect and most efficient over Ethernet WAN services. SONET/SDH is designed for TDM, but can also support packet switched networks. The waters have been muddied lately by the addition of Ethernet over SONET that gives you Ethernet services running on mature SONET fiber optic networks.

Another tradeoff worth doing is lit fiber vs dark fiber. Wavelengths are a lit fiber service. They are fully managed in the sense that the carrier provides the fiber path plus the terminal equipment that accepts and delivers your traffic. You don’t need to be concerned about the inner workings of the network because the carrier takes care of that for you.

The big advantages of dark fiber are improved security, since you are providing the terminal equipment at each end of the fiber, and the ability to create your own wavelengths. You’ll need to invest in the CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) or DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) equipment. By doing that, you can have as many wavelengths as you wish, each running a different protocol. You can even multiplex wavelengths to create higher bandwidth pipes.

Private Networking With Wavelength Services

There comes a time in the growth of a company when standard telecom services just won’t get it done anymore. This is when the IT department starts contemplating buying or renting dark fiber to get the bandwidth, latency and control they need. There’s another alternative that should be considered, however. That’s managed wavelength services.

See how managed wavelength services can give you the bandwidth and low laency you require...What’s a wavelength? It’s one color or lambda on a fiber optic strand. That’s right, fiber optic lines have more than one light beam running through them. Each color represents a different wavelength or frequency of laser light. Because they are different colors, these light beams will mix within the optical fiber strand but one will not interfere with another. It’s like they are completely different pairs of wires in a copper bundle or channels on a cable system.

Why have multiple wavelengths? It’s a matter of efficiency. The cost of the equipment to transmit and receive multiple lambdas is far less than the cost to trench or fly hundreds or thousands of miles of fiber optic cable. Each cable has multiple strands. Each strand has multiple wavelengths. Because of this, each fiber installation has massive bandwidth capability available for commercial use.

The technology that makes wavelengths possible is called DWDM or Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing. The “dense” designation means that many wavelengths are loaded onto the fiber with close spacing between them. DWDM terminal equipment must have precise and stable control of the grid of light wavelengths on the fiber. There is an ITU (International Telecommunications Union) standard for this so that equipment is common for the industry. There can be as many as 160 channels or wavelengths, all in the infrared C and L bands, on each fiber strand.

What carriers who own fiber assets are doing is offering entire wavelengths for lease to companies that need high levels of bandwidth. 100 Mbps Corporate Ethernet

A new standard connection speed for medium to larger organizations is getting to be 100 Mbps. It may sound like an expensive and unnecessarily large network capacity, but it is actually neither. Fast Ethernet is the new DS3.

Get prices and availability for 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet WAN service...For those who remember only a few years ago when a T1 line offering 1.5 Mbps was considered a high bandwidth connection, the notion that 100 Mbps is now the benchmark may be a bit unnerving. A lot has changed over the last decade. Application requirements have increased dramatically. We might have settled for fuzzy slow motion video conferencing when even that was a novelty. Now it’s full motion HD two-way video and telepresence. E-commerce has gone from an add-on service for a bricks and mortar facility to the dominant way that many companies do business. Dynamic interactive web pages with video have replaced low resolution static HTML brochure pages.

The standard Ethernet LAN speeds are 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps. In some cases, that’s been increased to 10 Gbps. Many, Many networks have most of their nodes running at 100 Mbps simply because so much equipment has network interface cards standardized at 10/100 Mbps. The big speed bump has been at the edge of the LAN where it connects to the outside world. Fast Ethernet may be more than adequate for internal file transfers. But going from 100 Mbps inside to a 1.5 Mbps T1 line outside can slow traffic to a crawl.

Medium and larger companies have reduced the speed bump by upgrading from T1 to DS3 connections. DS3 offers 45 Mbps, a bandwidth increase of 28x when line overhead is factored in. The new replacement for DS3 is Fast Ethernet at 100 Mbps. That’s more than double the bandwidth, a protocol that is directly compatible with corporate LANs, and a cost savings to boot. What’s not to like?

Ethernet Offers Lower Cost Carrier Grade Fiber Solutions

High bandwidth users, such as major corporations, large medical centers, independent phone companies, video production houses, and Internet service providers, have a new option to get the carrier grade bandwidth they need at prices much lower than they’ve been used to paying. The game changer is Carrier Ethernet.

Carrier Ethernet describes a metropolitan and long haul bandwidth service based on Ethernet rather than traditional telco TDM technologies. Within a single metropolitan area, the service is often called Metro Ethernet. These services are professional grade bandwidth solutions that offer high reliability as well as high dedicated bandwidths.

Ethernet can be carried over long distances on existing SONET/SDH fiber optic networks, or the newer MPLS networks that are favored by competitive service providers. Last mile connectivity can be over fiber, twisted pair copper or wireless.

Ethernet over copper? Yes, in fact it is called just that. EoC uses multiple copper pair telco cables and new generation terminal equipment to transport Ethernet via copper cabling that is already provisioned to most business locations. How much bandwidth can you expect from such a solution? Standard 10 Mbps Ethernet and fractional bandwidths such as 1, 2, or 5 Mbps are typical selections. But with prices lower, not higher, than traditional bandwidth solutions, it’s pretty hard not to insist on Carrier Ethernet.
